So, you’re thinking about joining a gym and investing in your fitness – HIGH FIVE! Whether you’re dreaming of squat goals, mental clarity, or a solid morning sweat sesh, choosing the right gym can totally shape your journey. But with a million options and shiny promises, where do you start? Don’t worry, I’ve got you.
Joining a gym is a very personal thing, everyone has different aims and goals, different budgets and wants different things. Here are a few things to consider. Questions to ask yourself. Consider this your go-to guide for choosing the right gym for you, a gym that actually fits your vibe (and goals):
LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION
On the real location is probably the most important consideration. If the location of the gym is inconvenient, you will not go…choose a location that fits YOUR life. Do you want to want a gym closer to work, home or en-route between the two?
Convenience is everything.
VIBES MATTER: FIND YOUR ENERGY
Gyms are not a one-size-fits-all. Some are heavy on the weight, some zen havens, others all about the community. Ask yourself:
- Do I want a community or individual experience – in and out vibe?
- Do i want to go to group classes or solo lifting (or both)?
- Does the gym feel inspiring and not intimidating?
If building confidence is part of your journey, find a gym with positive vibes with encouraging members and staff. Many gyms offer women-only areas or small group coaching for an added confidence boost, especially when you’re just starting out.
The gym’s energy should match your energy. You want to feel good (whatever that is for you) when you step into that gym reception!
WHAT’S ON THE MENU

Check the class schedule and equipment! Do you want to try Pilates, Spin class, Body Pump? Make sure your gym offers a good variety of things you actually want to do and at a time that you can attend. There is no point offering gym classes but at 3pm and you work a 9-5 and cannot attend.
Also check the range of equipment and amenities the gym has to offer, is there enough equipment for the types of workouts you want? Is there a sauna, steam room, co-working space, kids club, tennis courts. Think about what you want out of a gym and make a list of ‘non-negotiables’.
CLEANLINESS AND COMFORT

Nothing kills your workout buzz like sticky floors or smelly mats. Look for:
- Clean locker rooms and bathrooms
- Proper ventilation and fresh smell
- Wipe-down stations near the machinery
Feeling safe and clean goes a long way in helping you feel comfortable and confident.
RULES

Different gyms have different rules, its worth checking that rule book. If you want to film yourself lifting heavy for your TikTok, make sure the gym allows you to film.
Does the gym offer guest passes, are there restrictions on days and times that you can bring guest? This is more common than you think.
I know its boring, but read them T&C’s!!
MONEY MONEY MONEY

This one goes without saying but obviously none of the above matters if it is not in your budget. Be realistic with this, there is no point signing up to a gym which is way too expensive and you can’t really afford as you may need to cancel sooner than planned.
From bougie boutique studios to budget-friendly franchises, there’s a wide price range. Ask about:
- Hidden fees (not cool but they do exist)
- Contract terms and cancellation policies – what is the notice period and how easy is it to cancel later down the line.
- Student or off-peak discounts
You don’t need the fanciest place – you need the one that fits your lifestyle and your wallet.
EXTRA PERKS

Perks aren’t everything—but let’s be honest, who doesn’t love a steam room or a free smoothie? Other nice-to-haves to think about:
- App-based class booking
- Nutrition coaching
- On-site childcare
- Free PT classes
CONCLUSION
The right gym should inspire you, not intimidate you. Whether you’re lifting for confidence, running for clarity, or just learning what works for your body—this is your journey. Make it yours.
And hey, if you leave your first session feeling like a slightly sweatier, calmer or more confident version of “That Girl”… you’re doing it right. 💪✨
